How to do a "clean and scrub" install on QCharts v6.x and install the latest version.

In some cases, you may want to be sure your QC 6 is completely un-installed before installing a new version.

Here's how to do that. I recommend doing this before installing v6.2.x.

This assumes your QCharts installation folder is: C:\Program Files\QCharts\

Protect your workspaces and your layouts, symbol files etc.

Absolutely critical - we are going to be manually deleting the entire QCharts folder later on, so if your workspaces (the .qcw files) are stored inside of the "Workspaces" folder that is inside of the QCharts installation folder, you must move them out of there. If you have any doubt, you can just copy or move the entire Workspaces folder out from under the QCharts installation folder. Some of you store your workspaces in a folder located outside of the QCharts installation folder - that's fine. We won't need to move your workspaces out of the way if this applies to you.

Also, the same logic applies to your Layouts folder. If you have made custom Layouts, then you should save them. Back the folder up to CD or USB stick or alternate hard drive location, etc. This also applies to your "Symbols" folder (if you have custom sym files there), "Sounds" folder (if you have sounds you've created) and "User" folder (if you want to keep your Alerts).

Got them moved (if you need to)?

Good....Then we can proceed....

First we remove the application:

Go to the Control Panels - ("Start" then "Control Panel")

in XP click the "Add / Remove Programs" control panel

Find the entry for QCharts and click un-install or Remove.

Run through the steps to get it completely removed.

in Vista click the "Programs and Features" control panel (or look under "Programs" and click "uninstall a program")

Find the entry for QCharts and click un-install or Remove.

Run through the steps to get it completely removed.

Second, we delete the leftover QCharts folder:

We need to delete the leftover folder on the C drive.

in XP - click "Start" then "My Computer". This will open up the My Computer window. Then double click the C drive. Then double click the folder called "Program Files". Scroll down and find the folder called "QCharts". Delete it.

in Vista - same as above except "My Computer" is just called "Computer".

A general note on this step - applies to WinXP, Vista, Windows7 - if you've had multiple installations of QCharts in different directories - please get rid of all of them after you save the workspaces or other info you need out of each of them. We are trying to get to ONE solid installation of QCharts. No additional installation directories left over.

Third, we get rid of the Registry entry:

in XP - click "Start" then "Run" then in the box type regedit and click "OK" This will open the Registry Editor.

In the Registry Editor, you'll see this:

Click the plus by "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and open that folder.

Then click the plus by the "Software" folder.

Then click on the eSignal folder itself (don't click the plus sign by it).

The eSignal text will turn blue and the folder will open. That means that just that eSignal folder is selected.

Push Delete on your keyboard and answer Yes to the message that pops up about deleting the folder and its subkeys. You want to delete the eSignal registry key (folder).

Then, click the (-) signs by Software and by "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"  to close those folders back up and leave the Registry Editor as you found it. Then exit from the Registry Editor.

in Vista - Click the Start button, then in the Search box (it says "Start Search" in light grey text) type regedit and push Enter. That will launch the Registry Editor and you can follow the XP instructions above from there.

Fourth - we remove these files from the C:\Windows directory:

Use the "Search" function in Windows to search for these files on your C drive:

nm.exe, newsdb.dll, nmsrv.dll, winsig.*, winros.*, dbcapi.dll, Reader.ini

Delete them if they are found.
NOTE: IF you have other eSignal apps or third party apps that use the eSignal feed, do not delete dbcapi.dll.

You can copy and paste the above line into your "All or part of the file name:" search window, like this:

That's it.

You've uninstalled all traces of QCharts from your system.

Now you can go download a new version and install it clean.

Remember, if you're on Vista, you must do this:

The QCharts download site is here:

http://www.qcharts.com/download/default.asp

You'll want to download the latest version that is there.

After you do the new install - please open QCharts, log into a workspace, then close it and log out of QCharts and the Data Manager.

Let things sit closed for two minutes.

Then, log into QCharts and open it a second time.

Then open your workspace and you should be all good.
